Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jaxson will be able to create a small pottery piece using hand-building techniques.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed:

  • Clay
  • Rolling pin
  • Modeling tools or kitchen utensils for shaping
  • Water and sponge
  • Plastic covering or plastic bag to keep clay moist

Prep: Find a clean and spacious area to work in, and have a table or flat surface to build on.

Activities

1. Start by kneading the clay to make it soft and pliable.

2. Use the rolling pin to flatten the clay to an even thickness.

3. Shape the clay using your hands and tools to create a small bowl or sculpture.

4. Smooth the surface of your piece with water and a sponge.

5. Let your creation air dry for a day or two before painting or decorating.

Talking Points

  • Clay is a natural material that has been used by humans for thousands of years to create pottery. You can mold it into different shapes and forms.
  • "Pottery is an art form that allows us to express our creativity through our hands." - Mention this to Jaxson.
  • Hand-building techniques involve using your hands and simple tools to create pottery, as opposed to using a pottery wheel.
  • "Remember to keep your clay moist by covering it with plastic when not working on it." - Remind Jaxson about this important step.
  • After creating your pottery piece, you can decorate it with paints, glazes, or other materials to make it unique and personalized.
