Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic concepts of Earth Science through engaging experiments.
Materials and Prep
- Empty plastic bottle
- Water
- Food coloring
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Small container
- Measuring spoons
- Plastic cup
- Straw
- Paper towel
- Pen or pencil
- Science notebook
Make sure to read the experiment instructions carefully before starting, and gather all the materials in one place.
Activities
-
Volcano Eruption
Create a volcano eruption using baking soda and vinegar. Fill the plastic bottle halfway with vinegar. Add a few drops of food coloring to make it more visually appealing. In a small container, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste. Quickly pour the baking soda paste into the bottle of vinegar and observe the eruption.
-
Cloud in a Cup
Fill a plastic cup with hot water until it is about two-thirds full. Cover the cup with a paper towel, securing it with a rubber band. Place an ice cube on top of the paper towel. Watch as a cloud forms inside the cup due to the condensation of water vapor.
-
Straw Oboes
Take a straw and cut it into different lengths. Place one end of each straw into your mouth and blow gently to produce different pitches. Observe how the length of the straw affects the sound produced.
Sixth Grade Talking Points
- "Earth Science is the study of the Earth's systems, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere."
- "Volcanoes are formed when molten rock, called magma, rises to the surface of the Earth."
- "Clouds are formed when warm air rises and cools, causing water vapor to condense into tiny droplets or ice crystals."
- "Sound is produced by vibrations, and the pitch of a sound is determined by the frequency of these vibrations."
