Objective
By the end of this 5-day Science lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of the scientific process, including making observations, asking questions, forming hypotheses, and conducting simple experiments.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Magnifying glass, thermometer, notebook, pencil
Prep: Familiarize yourself with using the magnifying glass and thermometer. Prepare a safe outdoor space for exploration.
Activities
1. Nature Walk Observation: Take a nature walk and use the magnifying glass to observe plants, insects, and rocks up close.
2. Weather Watch: Use the thermometer to measure and record the temperature at different times of the day for a week.
3. Sink or Float Experiment: Gather various objects and predict if they will sink or float in a tub of water. Test your predictions and record the results.
Talking Points
- Observation: "Science is all about looking closely at things around us. What do you see when you use the magnifying glass?"
- Asking Questions: "It's important to ask questions to learn more. What questions do you have about the bugs you see?"
- Hypothesis: "A hypothesis is like a guess. What do you think will happen when we put this object in water?"
- Experiment: "An experiment is like a fun test. Let's see if our prediction was correct. Did it sink or float?"
- Conclusion: "After doing all these activities, what have you learned about science? It's okay to be curious and explore!"
