Activities

  • Create a scale model of the solar system using ratios. For example, if Earth is 12,742 km in diameter, how big would Jupiter be if Earth was 1 cm in your model?
  • Calculate your weight on different planets. Use the formula Weight = Mass x Gravity. Find out how much you would weigh on Mars, Jupiter, or even Pluto!
  • Planetary Math Riddles: Create math problems related to planets. For example, "If Saturn has 62 moons and each moon has 5 craters, how many craters are there in total?"

Talking Points

  • Planets are huge balls of rock or gas that orbit around the Sun. Remember, the Sun is like a big shiny star in the middle of our solar system. It keeps all the planets in their orbits. Just like how you spin a basketball on your finger!
  • Each planet is different in size and weight. Earth is our home planet, and it's just the right size for us to live comfortably. But did you know that Jupiter is so big that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it? That's like having a huge planet party!
  • Gravity is what makes things fall down to the ground. On different planets, gravity is different. So, if you were on Mars, you would weigh less than on Earth because Mars has less gravity. You might feel like you could jump really high there!
