Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the principles of archaeological stratigraphy, particularly in the context of ancient Greece. They will learn how layers of soil and artifacts are analyzed to interpret historical events and cultures. Additionally, they will conduct a hands-on lab experiment that simulates stratigraphic excavation, enhancing their understanding of the field of archaeology.

Materials and Prep

  • Plastic containers or small boxes (to simulate excavation sites)
  • Sand, soil, or dirt (to create layers)
  • Small objects (like pebbles, coins, or toy figures) to represent artifacts
  • Measuring cups or spoons
  • Plastic spoons or small trowels (for excavation)
  • Pencil and paper (for recording findings)
  • Ruler (for measuring layers)

Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with the concept of stratigraphy and the significance of archaeological layers in understanding historical timelines.

Activities

  • Stratigraphic Layer Creation: Begin by creating a simulated excavation site in a plastic container. Layer soil and sand in the container, placing small objects at various depths to represent artifacts. This will serve as the basis for the lab experiment.

  • Excavation Simulation: Using the plastic spoons or small trowels, the student will carefully excavate the layers of soil, documenting the depth and type of artifacts found at each level. This simulates real archaeological digs and teaches patience and precision.

  • Analysis and Interpretation: After excavation, the student will analyze their findings. They will write a report detailing the layers excavated, the artifacts found, and what these findings suggest about the historical context of their simulated site.

Talking Points

  • "Stratigraphy is like a historical timeline buried in the ground. Each layer tells us something different about the past."
  • "In archaeology, we often say, 'The deeper you go, the older it gets.' This is because the oldest artifacts are usually found in the lowest layers."
  • "Understanding how to interpret layers helps archaeologists piece together the story of human civilization."
  • "Artifacts are like clues in a mystery. Each one can tell us about the culture, technology, and daily life of people who lived long ago."
  • "In Greece, many archaeological sites have revealed layers of history dating back thousands of years, showing how civilizations evolved."
  • "The practice of careful excavation is essential because disturbing the layers can lead to losing important information."
  • "Did you know that some ancient Greek sites have multiple layers from different periods? Each layer can represent a different civilization!"
  • "When we analyze artifacts, we ask questions like: What was it made of? What was its purpose? Who used it?"
  • "The process of documenting findings is crucial. It helps other archaeologists understand what you discovered."
  • "Archaeology is not just about digging; it's also about storytelling. We use the evidence we find to tell stories of the past."
  • "Remember, every excavation site is unique. No two sites will tell the same story."
  • "The field of archaeology is interdisciplinary. It combines history, science, and even art to understand our past."
  • "In Greece, sites like Pompeii have taught us a lot about daily life in ancient times through their preserved artifacts."
  • "Being an archaeologist requires patience. Sometimes, it takes years to analyze what you've found!"
  • "Finally, always respect the sites you study. They are windows into our shared human history."
