Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of gardening, including what plants need to grow, how to care for them, and the joy of watching them flourish.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type, such as beans or flowers)
- Soil (can be collected from the backyard or a garden)
- A small container or pot (can be a recycled container like a yogurt cup)
- Water (in a cup or small watering can)
- Sunlight (a sunny spot in the home or outside)
Before the lesson, make sure to find a good spot for planting and gather all the materials. Explain to the student that we will be planting seeds and taking care of them together!
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
Help the student fill the container with soil and make small holes for the seeds. Let them place the seeds in the holes and cover them with soil. This is their first step in becoming a gardener!
-
Watering Time:
Show the student how to gently water the soil. Explain that plants need water to drink, just like we do! Let them water the seeds and feel the soil.
-
Sunshine Dance:
Take the container to a sunny spot and do a little dance! Explain that plants love sunshine, and just like us, they need it to grow strong and healthy.
-
Daily Check-up:
Set a routine for checking the seeds every day. Ask the student to look for any changes and talk about what they see. They will learn to be patient and excited about growth!
Talking Points
- "Do you know what plants need to grow? They need soil, water, and sunshine!"
- "Look, we are planting seeds! Seeds are like tiny babies that will grow into big plants!"
- "When we water the seeds, we are giving them a drink, just like we drink water!"
- "Every day, we will check our seeds to see how they are growing. It's like waiting for a surprise!"
