Activities
- Introduction to Gardening:
Start by discussing what gardening is and why it is important. Explain that plants need water, sunlight, and soil to grow. Show the materials needed for the activity.
- Planting Seeds:
Guide the student in planting the seeds in the pot. Explain how to make a small hole in the soil, place the seed inside, and cover it with more soil. Encourage them to water the plant gently.
- Caring for the Plant:
Discuss the importance of taking care of plants. Teach the student how to water the plant regularly and provide it with enough sunlight. Explain that plants need these things to grow big and strong.
- Observing Growth:
Encourage the student to observe the plant every day and keep a journal or draw pictures to document its growth. Discuss the changes they notice and ask them questions about what they think is happening.
- Harvesting and Eating:
When the plant is fully grown, guide the student in harvesting the produce (if applicable) and enjoying it together. Discuss the satisfaction of growing and eating your own food.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Plants need water, sunlight, and soil to grow. Just like we need food, water, and a home to live."
- "When we plant seeds, we give them a home in the soil and help them grow into plants."
- "We need to take care of plants by giving them water and sunlight regularly. It's like giving them a drink and helping them get energy from the sun."
- "Plants grow and change every day. We can watch them get bigger and stronger, just like we grow and get stronger too."
- "When our plants are ready, we can pick the fruits or vegetables and eat them. It's like a special treat that we grew ourselves!"
