Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts while exploring the world of gardening.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds or seedlings
- Pots or containers
- Soil
- Watering can
- Shovel or trowel
- Math manipulatives (e.g., counting cubes, number flashcards)
- Writing materials (pencil, paper)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Counting Seeds: Count out a specific number of seeds together, such as 10. Then plant the seeds in the soil and water them. Discuss the importance of counting and how it helps us keep track of things.
- Measuring Soil: Use a measuring cup or a scoop to measure out a certain amount of soil for each pot. Ask the student to help you measure and compare the amounts. Talk about how measurements help us follow instructions and ensure consistency.
- Addition and Subtraction with Plants: Take two pots with different numbers of seedlings. Ask the student to count the total number of seedlings and then subtract the number of seedlings in one pot. Repeat the activity with addition. Discuss how addition and subtraction help us understand quantities and changes.
- Pattern Planting: Create a simple planting pattern using different types of plants or colors. For example, plant a red flower, followed by a yellow flower, and then repeat the pattern. Encourage the student to identify and continue the pattern. Talk about how patterns help us organize and predict.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Plants need seeds to grow. We can count the seeds to know how many we have."
- "When we measure the soil, it helps us know how much to use for each pot."
- "Adding means putting things together, and subtracting means taking things away."
- "Patterns have a repeating order. We can look for the pattern and continue it."
