Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a foundational understanding of Business Intelligence (BI), including its importance in decision-making, key components, and practical applications. The student will also create a simple BI report using hypothetical data to solidify their learning.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Access to a computer with spreadsheet software (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets)
  • Sample data set (can be created or imagined for the lesson)
  • Internet access for research and examples

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful for the student to have a basic understanding of data analysis and spreadsheet functionalities.

Activities

  • Introduction to Business Intelligence:

Begin with a brief discussion about what Business Intelligence is. The student can research online to find various definitions and examples, then summarize their findings in their notebook.

  • Exploring BI Tools:

Have the student explore different Business Intelligence tools available in the market (like Tableau, Power BI, etc.). They can create a comparison chart of features and pricing based on their research.

  • Creating a BI Report:

Using the sample data set, the student will create a simple BI report in their spreadsheet software. They will learn how to visualize data using charts and graphs, and provide insights based on their findings.

  • Case Study Discussion:

Find a case study online where a company successfully used BI to improve their operations. The student can present their findings to you, discussing the challenges faced and how BI helped solve them.
