Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a foundational understanding of Business Intelligence (BI), including its purpose, key components, and how data can be transformed into actionable insights for decision-making in a business context.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic understanding of data concepts such as databases, data warehousing, and analytics

Activities

  • BI Concept Brainstorm:

    Start with a brainstorming session on what the student thinks Business Intelligence means. Write down keywords and phrases on a whiteboard. Discuss each term and its relevance to BI.

  • Data Visualization Exploration:

    Have the student find an online BI tool (like Tableau or Power BI) and explore its features. Ask them to create a simple data visualization using sample data available online.

  • Case Study Analysis:

    Choose a well-known company that uses BI (like Amazon or Netflix). Research how they implement BI strategies and present findings in a short presentation.

  • BI Game Simulation:

    Create a fun role-play activity where the student acts as a BI analyst. Present them with a scenario where they need to analyze data and provide insights to improve a fictional company’s sales.
