Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify, blend, segment, and manipulate phonological units in spoken words. This will help them become better readers and writers, making it easier to create their own texts.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials are needed; just your voice and imagination!
  • Be ready to make sounds and play with words together!

Activities

  • Sound Hunt:

Go on a sound hunt around the house! Pick an object, say its name slowly, and identify the sounds you hear. For example, for "cat," you can say "c-a-t." Can you find something that starts with the same sound?

  • Rhyming Games:

Take turns saying a word, and then see if you can think of a word that rhymes with it. For example, if you say "hat," the student might say "bat" or "mat." Make it a fun competition!

  • Sound Clapping:

Clap your hands for each sound in a word. For example, for "dog," you would clap three times: "d" (clap), "o" (clap), "g" (clap). Try different words and see how many claps you can do!

  • Word Creation:

Choose a few sounds and mix them up to create silly words! For example, if you choose "b," "a," and "t," you can make "bat." What other funny words can you create together?

Talking Points

  • "Can you hear the first sound in the word 'sun'? What is it?"
  • "Let's clap for each sound in 'fish.' How many claps do we have?"
  • "What do you think rhymes with 'ball'? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "If I say 'cat,' can you change the first sound to make a new word? What will it be?"
  • "How many sounds do you hear in the word 'jump'? Let's count them together!"
