Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic swimming concepts, including water safety, floating techniques, and simple movements in the water. They will also gain confidence in their ability to have fun while swimming!

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson, just a safe area to practice swimming techniques, like a pool or a shallow area of water.
  • Make sure the water is warm and safe for swimming.
  • Ensure an adult is present to supervise and assist during the activities.

Activities

  • Water Safety Talk: Start the lesson by discussing the importance of safety in and around water. Explain what to do if they feel scared or if they need help.
  • Floating Fun: Teach the student how to float on their back. Encourage them to lie back in the water and spread their arms and legs. Remind them to relax and take deep breaths.
  • Swim like a Fish: Show them how to move their arms and legs in the water. You can demonstrate a simple arm stroke and kick, and then let them try it out while you cheer them on!
  • Bubble Blowing: Have the student practice blowing bubbles in the water. This will help them feel comfortable with their face in the water and teach them to control their breath.
  • Water Games: End the lesson with some fun water games like "Shark and Fish" or "Treasure Hunt" where they can practice their swimming skills while having fun!

Talking Points

  • "Always remember, safety first! If you ever feel scared, just wave your hand and I will come help you!"
  • "Floating is like being a big, happy jellyfish! Can you feel how the water holds you up?"
  • "When we swim, we move our arms and legs like a fish! Can you swim like a fish with me?"
  • "Blowing bubbles helps us practice breathing! Let's see who can make the biggest bubbles!"
  • "Games in the water are super fun! Let's pretend to be sharks and fish and see who can swim the fastest!"
