Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of building and crafting, inspired by Home Depot workshops. They will learn about tools, safety, and how to create simple projects using their imagination.
Materials and Prep
- Cardboard boxes
- Paper plates
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
- Glue or tape
- Markers or crayons
- Safety goggles (for fun and safety!)
Before the lesson, ensure that the workspace is safe and clear of any hazards. Prepare a small area where the student can freely create and explore their projects.
Activities
-
Tool Time Role Play:
Introduce the student to different tools using cardboard cutouts or drawings. Explain what each tool does and how it helps in building projects. Let them pretend to use the tools while wearing safety goggles!
-
Build a Mini House:
Using the cardboard boxes, guide the student to design and build their own mini house. They can use scissors to cut out doors and windows, and decorate the house with markers and paper plates.
-
Creative Crafting:
Encourage the student to create something unique, like a robot or an animal, using the materials provided. This activity will promote creativity and problem-solving as they figure out how to assemble their creation.
Talking Points
- "Do you know what each tool does? This is a hammer, and it helps us put things together!"
- "Look at your mini house! What colors do you want to use to make it special?"
- "When you use scissors, always be careful! We want to keep our fingers safe!"
- "What do you want to build next? Let your imagination fly!"
- "Remember, it's okay if something doesn't work out. We can always try again!"
