Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of Christian ethics surrounding the topic of suicide. They will explore various perspectives, engage in thoughtful discussions, and reflect on the moral implications and support systems available to individuals in crisis.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for reflective writing
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to a quiet space for discussion
  • Basic understanding of Christian teachings and scripture related to life and death

Activities

  • Scripture Exploration: The student will read selected Bible verses that address life, death, and hope. They will reflect on these passages and write a summary of their thoughts on how these scriptures relate to the topic of suicide.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios: The student will engage in role-playing exercises where they take on the roles of various characters (e.g., a friend in crisis, a family member, a counselor). This will help them explore different perspectives and responses to suicidal thoughts.

  • Discussion Circle: The student will participate in an open discussion about the ethical implications of suicide. They will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings while respecting differing viewpoints.

  • Creative Expression: The student will create a piece of art or write a poem that expresses their understanding of hope and support in the context of suicide. This will allow them to process their emotions and thoughts creatively.

  • "How can we support someone who is struggling?" - Discuss practical ways to offer support, such as listening without judgment and encouraging them to seek professional help.
  • "What role does faith play in healing?" - Explore how faith can offer hope and comfort to those in crisis, referencing stories of redemption and recovery.
