Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the story of David and Goliath from the Bible, learn about courage and faith, and express their understanding through music and movement.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials are required; just a willingness to learn and have fun!
  • Prepare to share the story of David and Goliath in a simple and engaging way.
  • Think about how music can be used to express the emotions in the story.

Activities

  • Story Time with Rhythm: Start by telling the story of David and Goliath using a rhythmic pattern. Clap your hands to create a beat as you narrate the story, allowing the student to join in with claps or simple instruments like pots and pans.

  • Sing a Courage Song: Create a simple song about being brave like David. Use the tune of a familiar children's song, such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and change the words to reflect the story. For example: "Brave, brave David, strong and true, He faced Goliath, yes he knew!"

  • Movement and Dance: Encourage the student to act out the story through movement. When you say "David," they can jump up high, and when you say "Goliath," they can stomp their feet. This will help them remember the characters and the story while having fun!

  • Make a Brave Shield: Have the student draw or imagine a shield that represents their courage. They can sing their courage song while showing their shield, reinforcing the lesson of bravery.

Talking Points

  • "Who was David? He was a young boy who trusted God!"
  • "What did David use to fight Goliath? A slingshot and a stone! That shows us we can be brave even when we're small!"
  • "Why was Goliath so scary? He was big and strong, but David had faith!"
  • "What does it mean to be brave? It means doing something even if we're a little scared!"
  • "Can you think of a time when you were brave? Just like David, you can do great things!"
