Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand what a presidential election is, how it works, and why it is important in the United States. The student will also learn about the roles of the president and the voting process.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- Whiteboard or large paper for brainstorming
- Timer (optional for activities)
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of presidential elections, including the terms "candidate," "vote," and "election day." Prepare to explain these concepts in simple terms.
Activities
-
Presidential Candidate Creation: The student will create their own presidential candidate. They will come up with a name, a fun slogan, and a list of three promises they would make if they were elected. This helps them understand what candidates do during elections.
-
Voting Simulation: Set up a mock election where the student can vote for their favorite candidate (from the previous activity). Use paper ballots and a box to collect votes, teaching them how voting works.
-
Presidential Role Play: The student will choose a famous president and act out a short speech or a day in the life of that president. This will help them connect with history and understand the role of the president.
-
Election Day Countdown: Create a countdown calendar leading up to a mock election day. Each day, the student can learn a new fact about elections or presidents, building excitement and knowledge.
