Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the importance of the Yangtze River, its geography, the creatures that live in it, and how it affects the people who live nearby.
Materials and Prep
- Blank paper
- Colored pencils or crayons
- A globe or map (if available, otherwise just use imagination)
- Access to a computer or tablet for research (optional)
- Prepare a fun fact sheet about the Yangtze River
Activities

Draw the Yangtze River:
Using the blank paper and colored pencils, the student will draw a map of the Yangtze River. They can include mountains, cities, and animals that live in and around the river.

Yangtze River Creature Hunt:
Ask the student to imagine they are explorers. They will write down or draw pictures of at least five animals that live in or near the Yangtze River, such as the Yangtze giant softshell turtle or the Chinese sturgeon.

Story Time:
Have the student create a short story about a day in the life of a child living by the Yangtze River. What do they see? What do they do? This will help them connect personally to the location.

Fun Facts Presentation:
Using the fun fact sheet prepared earlier, the student can present three interesting facts about the Yangtze River to you, as if they were teaching you!
