Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of elections, including what they are, why they are important, and how they work. The student will also learn about the roles of voters and candidates, and will engage in fun activities that reinforce these concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- A timer or stopwatch
- Simple ballots printed on paper (can be homemade)
- Access to a computer or device (optional for research)
Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of your country's election process and any relevant upcoming elections. Prepare the ballots in advance and consider a few fun election-related topics for the student to vote on.
Activities
-
Election Vocabulary Bingo:
Create a Bingo card with election-related words (like "vote," "candidate," "ballot," etc.). As you call out definitions, the student will cover the corresponding word on their card. This will help them learn important terms in a fun way!
-
Mock Election:
Set up a mock election where the student can choose between fun topics (like "Best Ice Cream Flavor" or "Favorite Animal"). Create simple ballots for them to fill out and then count the votes together. Discuss the outcome and what it means to be a voter.
-
Candidate Creation:
Have the student create their own candidate for a fictional election. They should come up with a name, a slogan, and a list of promises or policies they would support. This will help them understand what makes a good candidate.
-
Election Day Role Play:
Role-play a day in the life of an election, with the student acting as a voter and you as the election official. Go through the steps of arriving at a polling place, checking in, and casting a vote. This will give them a practical understanding of the voting process.
