Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills in a fun Minecraft-themed activity.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game or Minecraft-inspired building blocks
- Paper and pencil
- Basic understanding of addition and subtraction
Activities
-
Activity 1: Building with Blocks
Using the Minecraft game or Minecraft-inspired building blocks, create a simple structure with a specific number of blocks. For example, build a house using 10 blocks.
Ask the student to count the number of blocks used and write it down.
-
Activity 2: Addition Challenge
Ask the student to add more blocks to the structure. For example, add 5 more blocks to the house.
Have the student count the total number of blocks now and write it down.
-
Activity 3: Subtraction Challenge
Ask the student to remove some blocks from the structure. For example, remove 3 blocks from the house.
Have the student count the remaining blocks and write it down.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "In Minecraft, we can use blocks to build different structures."
- "When we build with blocks, we can count how many blocks we used."
- "Adding means combining two or more numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction means taking away some numbers from a group to find what's left."
- "We can use addition to find the total number of blocks when we add more to our structure."
- "We can use subtraction to find how many blocks are left when we remove some from our structure."
