Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify different parts of a tree, understand how trees grow, and appreciate the importance of trees in our environment.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Be prepared to go outside to observe trees and their surroundings.
  • Know some fun facts about trees to share with the student.

Activities

  • Tree Observation Walk: Take a walk outside and look for different trees. Ask the student to point out different trees and describe what they see, such as the color of the leaves and the shape of the trunk.
  • Parts of a Tree Drawing: Have the student draw a tree and label its parts (roots, trunk, branches, leaves). Encourage them to be creative with colors and shapes.
  • Tree Story Time: Make up a short story about a tree. It can be about a tree that grows in a magical forest or a tree that helps animals find shelter. Let the student add their own ideas to the story!

Talking Points

  • "What color are the leaves on this tree? Trees can have green, yellow, or even red leaves!"
  • "Do you see how big the trunk is? The trunk helps the tree stand tall and strong!"
  • "What do you think roots do? They drink water and keep the tree in the ground!"
  • "Why do you think trees are important? They give us oxygen to breathe and homes for animals!"
  • "Can you imagine what it would be like if there were no trees? Everything would look very different!"
