Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own tracing art pages, enhancing their drawing skills and understanding of shapes, lines, and forms. They will also learn how to incorporate their personal style into their artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Tracing paper
  • Pencils
  • Black fine-tip markers
  • Reference images or printed coloring pages
  • Eraser
  • Ruler (optional for straight lines)

Before the lesson, gather reference images that the student is interested in tracing. This could be anything from animals to patterns or even their favorite cartoon characters. Make sure the tracing paper is clean and ready to use!

Activities

  • Activity 1: Warm-Up Tracing

Start with simple shapes and lines. The student will trace basic geometric shapes to get comfortable with the tracing technique. This will help them understand how to control their hand movements while tracing.

  • Activity 2: Tracing from Reference

Choose one of the reference images and place it under the tracing paper. The student will trace the outlines carefully, focusing on capturing the details. Encourage them to take their time and not rush through the process.

  • Activity 3: Personal Style Addition

After tracing the reference image, the student can add their own elements or styles to the traced artwork. This could include adding patterns, colors, or even altering the design to make it more personal and unique.

  • Activity 4: Final Touches

Once the student is satisfied with their traced art, they can go over the pencil lines with a black fine-tip marker to make the outlines stand out. After that, they can erase any pencil marks that are still visible, leaving a clean piece of art.

Talking Points

  • "Tracing is a great way to improve your hand-eye coordination and learn how to draw shapes accurately."
  • "When you trace, focus on the lines and shapes. It's all about control and precision."
  • "Feel free to experiment! Adding your own elements to a traced image can make it truly yours."
  • "Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Every artist learns through trial and error."
  • "Think about how different styles can change the mood of your artwork. What do you want your piece to express?"
