Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic biking safety rules, learn how to balance on a bike, and have fun practicing biking skills in a safe environment.
Materials and Prep
- A bicycle suitable for the child's size
- A helmet for safety
- Open space for biking, like a driveway or park
- Traffic cones or markers (optional, for obstacle course)
Before the lesson, make sure the bicycle is the right size for the child and that the helmet fits snugly. Choose a safe area with minimal distractions.
Activities
- Bike Safety Talk:
Start the lesson by discussing the importance of wearing a helmet and being aware of surroundings while biking. Explain that safety is the first rule of biking!
- Balancing Practice:
Have the student practice balancing on the bike without pedaling. Encourage them to put their feet on the ground and lift them up to find their balance.
- Slow Riding Challenge:
Set up a small course using cones or markers. Challenge the student to ride slowly through the course without touching the cones. This will help improve their control.
- Fun Bike Games:
Play a game of “Follow the Leader” where the student mimics your biking movements. This will make practice fun and engaging!
Talking Points
- "Why do we wear a helmet? It keeps our head safe if we fall!"
- "Can you feel how your body helps you balance? Let's try lifting our feet up!"
- "How slow can you go without touching the cones? Let's see if you can do it!"
- "What fun moves can you copy from me? Let’s make biking a fun game!"
