Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of biking, including safety rules, how to balance on a bike, and the joy of riding. They will also learn to identify different parts of a bike and practice some fun biking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A bicycle suitable for the student’s size
  • A helmet that fits properly
  • A flat, safe area for biking (like a driveway or park)
  • Brightly colored cones or markers (if available) to create a biking course
  • Optional: A small toy or stuffed animal to carry while biking

Before starting the lesson, ensure the bike is in good condition, and the helmet fits snugly. Choose a safe area with plenty of space for the student to practice biking.

Activities

  • Bike Familiarization:

Start by showing the student the different parts of the bike, like the handlebars, wheels, and pedals. Explain how each part helps them ride. This will help them feel more comfortable with the bike.

  • Safety First:

Discuss the importance of wearing a helmet and following safety rules. Have the student practice putting on their helmet and adjusting it correctly. Make it fun by saying, "We wear helmets to protect our heads like superheroes!"

  • Balance Practice:

Before pedaling, have the student practice balancing on the bike while stationary. They can put their feet on the ground and practice lifting them up to find their balance. Encourage them by saying, "Look! You're a balancing champion!"

  • Obstacle Course:

If you have cones or markers, set up a simple obstacle course. Have the student ride around the cones, practicing turning and stopping. Cheer them on by saying, "You’re zooming like a race car!"

  • Fun Ride:

Let the student ride freely in a safe area, encouraging them to enjoy the experience. You can join them on another bike or walk alongside. Say, "Riding is so much fun! Let’s see how fast we can go!"

Talking Points

  • "What do you think makes riding a bike so much fun?"
  • "Can you name the parts of the bike? What does each part do?"
  • "Why is it important to wear a helmet when we ride?"
  • "How do we keep our balance on the bike? Can you show me?"
  • "What was your favorite part of riding today? Did you feel like a superhero?"
