Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to engage in basic work-related conversations, understand common workplace vocabulary, and practice effective communication skills relevant to job settings.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes.
  • List of common workplace vocabulary words (to be created during the lesson).
  • Scenarios for role-playing work conversations (to be created during the lesson).
  • A timer for timed activities.

Before the lesson, the student should think about any jobs they are interested in or have had experience with, as this will help make the activities more relatable.

Activities

  • Vocabulary Brainstorm:

The student will brainstorm a list of words and phrases they associate with work. This can include job titles, tasks, and common expressions used in the workplace. After brainstorming, they will define each term and discuss its relevance.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios:

The student will create and act out different work-related scenarios with the teacher, such as a job interview, a meeting with a supervisor, or resolving a conflict with a coworker. This will help them practice speaking and listening skills in a realistic context.

  • Conversation Starters:

The student will develop a list of conversation starters and questions they can use in a work environment. They will then practice using these starters in mock conversations, focusing on tone and body language.

  • Feedback Session:

After the role-playing, the student will receive constructive feedback on their communication style, including clarity, confidence, and appropriate language use. They will also reflect on what they learned during the activities.
