Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to effectively demonstrate oral communication skills and active listening techniques that are essential in a work setting. They will understand the importance of clear communication and how to engage in conversations that foster collaboration and understanding.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Timer (can use a phone timer)
  • List of common workplace scenarios (can be created before the lesson)
  • Open space for role-playing activities

Before the lesson, prepare a list of common workplace scenarios such as team meetings, job interviews, and customer service interactions. Familiarize yourself with basic active listening techniques to guide the student through the activities.

Activities

  • Role-Playing Scenarios

Engage in role-playing different workplace scenarios. One person will take on the role of an employee, while the other acts as a manager or customer. Switch roles after each scenario to practice both sides of communication.

  • Listening Circle

In this activity, the student will share a brief story about a personal experience while the other listens actively. The listener must then summarize what they heard, highlighting key points to demonstrate understanding.

  • Feedback Session

After completing the role-playing scenarios, the student will provide constructive feedback to their partner on their communication style, focusing on clarity, tone, and body language. This will encourage self-reflection and improvement.

  • Communication Charades

Play a game of charades where the student must act out different workplace situations without speaking. This will help them understand non-verbal communication and its importance in conveying messages.

Talking Points

  • "Practice makes perfect." - Remind them that the more they practice speaking and listening, the better they will become at it.
  • "In a team, everyone’s voice matters." - Emphasize the importance of including everyone in discussions and valuing their input.
  • "Stay calm and composed, even in tough conversations." - Discuss strategies for managing emotions during difficult discussions.
  • "Summarizing helps clarify understanding." - Explain how summarizing what someone said can confirm comprehension and encourage further discussion.
  • "Using 'I' statements can help express feelings without blaming others." - Discuss how to communicate feelings effectively while minimizing conflict.
  • "Listening is just as important as speaking." - Reinforce the idea that good communication involves both speaking and listening skills.
  • "Practice empathy by putting yourself in others' shoes." - Encourage the student to consider others' perspectives during conversations.
  • "Be aware of your tone; it can change the meaning of your words." - Discuss how tone can influence how messages are received.
