Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a deeper understanding of the Super Mario Brothers franchise, including its characters, gameplay mechanics, and cultural impact. The student will also engage in creative activities that enhance their critical thinking and storytelling skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils or colored markers
  • A timer (optional)
  • Access to a computer or device for research (optional)

Before the lesson, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the main characters and some of the games in the Super Mario franchise. Think about what makes Mario and his adventures so special!

Activities

  • Character Creation:

Have the student design their own character that could fit into the Super Mario universe. They should create a name, special abilities, and a backstory. Encourage them to think about what kind of adventures their character would go on with Mario and Luigi!

  • Level Design:

Using paper, the student will draw a new level for a Super Mario game. They should include obstacles, power-ups, and enemies. After they finish, they can explain their level to you, detailing how it would challenge players.

  • Super Mario Trivia:

Prepare a trivia quiz about Super Mario Brothers. The student can either answer questions you create or research fun facts online. This will help them learn more about the franchise while having fun!

  • Story Time:

The student will write a short story featuring Mario, Luigi, and their new character. They can create a plot that involves rescuing Princess Peach or battling Bowser. Encourage creativity and fun twists!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that Mario was originally a carpenter before he became a plumber? How do you think that influenced his adventures?"
  • "What makes Mario such a beloved character? Is it his bravery, his friendship with Luigi, or something else?"
  • "Let’s think about the different power-ups in the game. Which one is your favorite, and why do you think it’s so cool?"
  • "Super Mario has been around since 1985! Why do you think it’s still popular today?"
  • "If you could create a new game in the Super Mario series, what would it be about? Who would be the villain?"
