Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic concepts of science through fun hands-on activities. They will learn about the properties of water, air, and simple reactions while developing their observation and critical thinking skills.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Ice cubes
- Empty plastic bottle
- Balloon
- Small bowl
- Paper and crayons
- Small container with vinegar
- Baking soda
- Plastic spoon
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and prepare a safe area for experiments. Ensure that the student understands basic safety rules, like not touching their face during experiments and asking for help when needed.
Activities
-
Melting Ice Experiment:
Place ice cubes in a bowl and observe how they change as they melt. Ask the student to describe what they see and feel the water as it forms.
-
Balloon Blow Up:
Fill the empty plastic bottle with a little vinegar and add a spoonful of baking soda. Quickly cover the bottle with a balloon and watch it inflate! Discuss what happened.
-
Water Play:
Use the bowl and water to explore how different objects float or sink. Let the student drop various items in and guess what will happen before testing it.
-
Drawing Science:
After the experiments, have the student draw their favorite experiment. Encourage them to use colors and explain their drawing to you.
Talking Points
- "What do you think will happen to the ice cubes when we leave them out? Let's watch and see!"
- "Look at the balloon! How did it get so big? What do you think is happening inside the bottle?"
- "Why do you think some things float and some things sink? Let's try it and find out!"
- "Can you tell me about your drawing? What was your favorite part of the science today?"
