Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of the Roman Empire, including its geography, culture, and important historical figures. The student will also engage in fun activities to reinforce their learning and spark their interest in history.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or markers
  • A large map of the Roman Empire (can be drawn or printed)
  • Access to a timeline of Roman history (can be created together)
  • Craft supplies for building a model (e.g., cardboard, scissors, glue)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with key events and figures of the Roman Empire such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, and the construction of the Colosseum. Prepare a simple timeline to illustrate the progression of the empire.

Activities

  • Map Exploration:

Using the map of the Roman Empire, the student can color and label important cities, rivers, and mountains. This will help them visualize where the empire was located and understand its vastness.

  • Create a Roman Timeline:

Together, create a timeline of significant events in Roman history. The student can draw pictures or write short descriptions of events like the founding of Rome, the reign of Julius Caesar, and the fall of the empire.

  • Build a Model of the Colosseum:

Using craft supplies, have the student build a model of the Colosseum. This hands-on activity will allow them to learn about Roman architecture and the importance of the Colosseum in Roman society.

  • Role-Playing Famous Romans:

The student can choose a famous Roman figure to role-play. They can prepare a short speech or presentation about that person’s contributions to the Roman Empire, encouraging creativity and public speaking.
