Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of plants, including how they grow, what they need to live, and the importance of plants in our environment.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- A small pot or container (can be a recycled one like a yogurt cup)
- Soil (can be gathered from outside)
- Seeds (any seeds from fruits or vegetables you have at home)
- Water
Before the lesson, make sure you have a space where you can get a little messy while planting seeds. Also, gather some fun facts about plants to share with your student!
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
Start by filling the pot with soil. Then, help the student plant the seeds about an inch deep. Talk about how seeds need soil, water, and sunlight to grow.
-
Drawing and Labeling:
After planting, have the student draw a picture of their plant and label the parts (roots, stem, leaves, and flowers). This will help them remember what each part does!
-
Plant Care Chart:
Create a simple chart to track how often the student waters the plant and how much sunlight it gets. This will teach them responsibility and the care plants need.
-
Fun Facts Sharing:
Share interesting facts about plants, like how some plants can live for hundreds of years or how some grow really fast. Encourage the student to share what they find fascinating!
Talking Points
- "Did you know that plants are living things just like us? They grow, eat, and need care!"
- "Plants need three main things to grow: soil, water, and sunlight. Can you remember what they are?"
- "Roots help the plant drink water from the soil. What do you think would happen if a plant didn't have roots?"
- "The stem is like a straw! It helps the plant drink water and gives it a way to stand up tall."
- "Leaves are like tiny kitchens! They make food for the plant using sunlight. Isn’t that cool?"
- "Plants are super important! They give us oxygen to breathe and food to eat. What’s your favorite plant or flower?"
