Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and use basic math concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction through fun Fortnite-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or Crayon
  • Fortnite character names or images (drawn or printed)
  • Timer (optional)

Before starting the lesson, it's helpful to know some of the student's favorite Fortnite characters and the basic math concepts we will be using, such as counting up to 10 and simple addition and subtraction.

Activities

  • Character Counting:

Have the student count their favorite Fortnite characters. Draw or write down the names of 5 characters and ask the student to count them out loud. This helps with number recognition and counting skills.

  • Loot Box Addition:

Create a fun scenario where the student finds loot boxes in Fortnite. For example, if they find 3 loot boxes and then find 2 more, ask them how many loot boxes they have now. This introduces basic addition.

  • Health Points Subtraction:

Explain that in Fortnite, players have health points. Create a simple game where the student starts with 10 health points and loses some points when they encounter challenges. For example, if they lose 3 points, ask them how many points they have left. This helps with subtraction.

  • Fortnite Shape Hunt:

Incorporate shapes by asking the student to find items around the house that match the shapes of Fortnite items (like squares for loot boxes or circles for shields). They can draw these shapes on paper as they find them.

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many Fortnite characters you see on this paper?"
  • "If you find 3 loot boxes and then find 2 more, how many do you have now? Let’s add them together!"
  • "You started with 10 health points. If you lose 3 points, how many do you have left? Let’s subtract!"
  • "What shapes can you find around the house that look like Fortnite items? Let's go on a shape hunt!"
  • "Math is like building in Fortnite! We use numbers to build our answers, just like we build our characters!"
