Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of basic math concepts through fun and engaging activities inspired by the game Prodigy. They will practice addition, subtraction, and problem-solving skills while enjoying the learning process.
Materials and Prep
- Access to a computer or tablet with Prodigy game
- Paper and crayons or markers
- Simple math problems written down (addition and subtraction)
- A timer (optional, for timed activities)
Activities
-
Prodigy Game Time:
Start the lesson by letting the student play Prodigy for 15-20 minutes. Encourage them to explore the game, solve math problems, and level up their character. This will get them excited about learning!
-
Math Art:
After playing, have the student draw their favorite character from Prodigy. While they draw, ask them to create simple math problems related to their drawing, like "If my character has 3 stars and finds 2 more, how many stars do they have now?"
-
Math Relay:
Set up a mini math relay race. Write simple addition and subtraction problems on pieces of paper and place them at one end of the room. The student must run to the problems, solve them, and run back to you to check their answers!
-
Story Time with Math:
Read a short story that includes numbers or counting. After reading, ask the student to come up with their own math story using their Prodigy character. For example, "My character found 4 magic potions and gave 1 to a friend. How many does my character have left?"
Talking Points
- "What did you like most about playing Prodigy? Can you tell me your favorite part?"
- "When you drew your character, how many math problems did you come up with? Let's solve them together!"
- "In our relay race, how fast can you solve these problems? Let’s see if you can beat your own time!"
- "Can you think of a story where your character needs to use math? What happens in your story?"
- "Why is it important to practice math? How does it help us in our game and in real life?"
