Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basics of anime, including its history, different genres, and how to create their own short anime character or story. They will also learn to appreciate the art style and storytelling techniques used in anime.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or colored pencils
- A notebook for notes
- Access to a list of popular anime titles (can be discussed verbally)
- Optional: A device to watch a short anime clip (if available)
Before the lesson, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with a few popular anime titles and their genres to discuss with the student.
Activities

Anime History Discussion:
Start by discussing the origins of anime in Japan and how it has evolved over the years. Share interesting facts about famous anime creators and landmark series.

Genre Exploration:
Introduce the student to different anime genres such as shonen, shojo, slice of life, and fantasy. Have them pick a genre they like and discuss what makes it special.

Create Your Own Character:
Guide the student in designing their own anime character. They can draw the character and write a short backstory, including their powers, personality, and favorite things.

Watch and Discuss:
If possible, watch a short anime clip together. Discuss the animation style, character design, and what they liked or didn't like about it.
