Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic math concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction through engaging physical activities using Hot Wheels cars. The student will also develop gross motor skills while having fun with their favorite toys.

Materials and Prep

  • Hot Wheels cars
  • Open space for racing and movement
  • Optional: Tape to mark start and finish lines

Before the lesson, ensure the area is safe for racing. You can use tape to create a start and finish line if desired. Make sure the student has a variety of Hot Wheels cars to choose from.

Activities

  • Hot Wheels Counting Race:

Lay out a number of Hot Wheels cars in a line. Ask the student to count the cars as they line them up. Then, they can race the cars and count how many times each car crosses the finish line!

  • Car Addition Challenge:

Set up two groups of cars. Ask the student to count how many cars are in each group. Then, have them combine the groups and count how many cars there are in total. This will introduce simple addition.

  • Hot Wheels Subtraction Game:

Start with a set number of cars (e.g., 5). Have the student "lose" a car by moving it away and ask them how many are left. This will help them understand subtraction in a fun way!

  • Obstacle Course:

Create an obstacle course using their Hot Wheels cars. As they navigate the course, they can count how many obstacles they go over or how many times they can go around the course in one minute!

Talking Points

  • "How many cars do you see here? Let's count them together!"
  • "If we have 3 cars and we get 2 more, how many cars do we have now? Let's add them!"
  • "If we start with 5 cars and we take away 1, how many cars are left? Let's find out!"
  • "Look at this fun obstacle course! How many times can you go around it in one minute? Let's see!"
