Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and use single and double predicates in sentences. They will understand the difference between the two and be able to create their own examples.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Whiteboard (optional)
  • Markers (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure the student understands what a predicate is: it's the part of a sentence that tells what the subject does or is. A single predicate has one verb, while a double predicate has two verbs.

Activities

  • Predicate Hunt:

Go on a "predicate hunt" around the house or outside. The student will look for objects or actions and create sentences using single and double predicates. For example, "The dog barks" (single) and "The dog barks and runs" (double).

  • Sentence Creation:

Have the student write five sentences using a single predicate and five sentences using a double predicate. Encourage creativity! They can use their favorite characters or animals in their examples.

  • Predicate Relay:

Set up a relay race where the student has to run to a designated spot, pick a card with a subject, and then quickly come up with a sentence using either a single or double predicate before running back!

Talking Points

  • "What is a predicate? It tells us what the subject is doing!"
  • "A single predicate has one action. Can you give me an example?"
  • "A double predicate has two actions! Can you think of a sentence with two verbs?"
  • "Let’s practice! If I say 'The cat sleeps,' what type of predicate is that?"
  • "Now, if I say 'The cat sleeps and dreams,' what do we have there?"
  • "Remember, the subject is who or what we are talking about. The predicate tells us what they do!"
  • "Can you spot the predicates in these sentences? Let's read them together!"
  • "Using double predicates makes our sentences more interesting! Can you think of a fun way to use them?"
  • "What did you enjoy most about finding predicates today?"
  • "Great job! Now you can spot single and double predicates like a pro!"
