Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze different writing styles and word choices used by various authors to address the theme of bullying. The student will practice annotating texts, discussing their analyses, and reflecting on the impact of word choice in conveying messages about bullying.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for annotations and notes
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to selected texts or excerpts about bullying (these can be from books, articles, or poems)
  • Highlighters for marking important passages
  • Preparation of discussion questions related to the texts

Activities

  1. Text Annotation: Choose a short story, poem, or article that deals with bullying. As the student reads, they will highlight key phrases and make notes in the margins about their thoughts, feelings, and questions regarding the text. This will help them engage with the material on a deeper level.

  2. Word Choice Analysis: After annotating, the student will select five significant words or phrases from the text. They will analyze why the author chose these specific words and how they contribute to the overall message about bullying. The student can write a short paragraph for each word explaining its impact.

  3. Group Discussion: If possible, arrange a virtual or in-person discussion with peers or family members about the text. The student will share their annotations and analyses, inviting others to contribute their thoughts on the theme of bullying and the effectiveness of the author's word choices.

  4. Creative Writing: Encourage the student to write a short story or poem inspired by their readings. They should incorporate their understanding of word choice and the theme of bullying, aiming to express their own perspective or message about the topic.
