Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have learned how to make simple cookies using basic ingredients. They will understand the steps involved in mixing, shaping, and baking cookies, and will enjoy a delicious treat at the end!

Materials and Prep

  • Flour
  • Butter (softened)
  • Sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Baking soda
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Cookie tray
  • Oven (for adult use only)
  • Cookie cutter (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all the materials in one place. Ensure the oven is ready for adult use, and be prepared to supervise closely during mixing and baking.

Activities

  • Mixing Ingredients:

Let the student help measure and pour the ingredients into the mixing bowl. Encourage them to use their hands to mix everything together, feeling the textures of the butter and sugar.

  • Shaping Cookies:

Once the dough is ready, let the student roll it into small balls or use cookie cutters to make fun shapes. This activity will help them develop fine motor skills.

  • Baking Time:

While the cookies are baking, talk about how the cookies will change. Use this time to discuss the smells and colors they will see when the cookies are done.

  • Taste Testing:

Once the cookies are cooled, have a taste test! Let the student describe how the cookie feels and tastes. Encourage them to share their favorite part!

Talking Points

  • "Look at all these ingredients! What do you think we are making?"
  • "Can you help me measure the flour? Let's pour it in together!"
  • "Feel the butter! It's soft and squishy. Can you squish it with your hands?"
  • "Now we mix! Can you stir it like this? Round and round!"
  • "Let's make cookie shapes! What shape do you want to make?"
  • "The cookies are baking! Can you smell that yummy smell?"
  • "Time to taste! How does it taste? Is it sweet? Yummy?"
