Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to make delicious cookies from scratch, understand the basic ingredients needed, and enjoy the fun of baking while practicing measuring and mixing skills.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven (with adult supervision)
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Before starting, make sure to have all the ingredients measured out and ready to go. Also, remind the student to wash their hands before cooking!

Activities

  • Ingredient Exploration: Discuss each ingredient and its role in the cookie-making process. For example, "What do you think sugar does to our cookies?"

  • Measuring Fun: Let the student measure each ingredient using the measuring cups and spoons. Encourage them to be precise and say, "Look, we're making science with our cookie ingredients!"

  • Mixing Magic: Allow the student to mix the ingredients together in the bowl. Talk about how the texture changes, saying, "Wow! Look how fluffy our dough is getting!"

  • Shaping Cookies: Help the student scoop the dough onto the baking sheet. Ask them, "How do you want your cookies to look? Big or small?"

  • Baking Time: With adult supervision, place the cookies in the oven. Set a timer and talk about how baking changes the dough, saying, "Can you smell that? Our cookies are getting ready!"

  • Taste Test: Once the cookies are baked and cooled, enjoy tasting them together. Ask, "What do you think? Did we make the best cookies ever?"

Talking Points

  • "Cookies are like little pieces of happiness! What do you think makes them so special?"
  • "Every ingredient has a job. Sugar makes it sweet! What do you think butter does?"
  • "Measuring is like a fun game! Can you guess how many cups we need?"
  • "Mixing is where the magic happens! Can you feel the dough getting different?"
  • "Baking is like a surprise party for our cookies! What shape do you think they will take?"
  • "Tasting is the best part! What flavor do you like the most in cookies?"
