Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the Ancient Maya civilization, including their culture, achievements, and daily life. The student will also be able to create a simple representation of a Maya city and understand the significance of their contributions to history.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper or cardboard for drawing
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Scissors (if cutting is needed)
  • Glue or tape (if making a model)
  • A space to work comfortably

Before the lesson, it would be helpful to have some basic knowledge about the Ancient Maya, such as their location in Mesoamerica, key achievements like the calendar and pyramids, and their unique writing system.

Activities

The student will draw a representation of a Maya city, including pyramids, houses, and a ball court. Encourage them to research what a Maya city looked like and include details like the layout and important buildings.

  • Maya Calendar Creation:

The student will create their own version of the Maya calendar using paper and colored pencils. They can learn about the significance of the calendar in Maya culture and design their own symbols for special days.

  • Role-Playing Ancient Maya:

The student can choose a role (like a farmer, priest, or merchant) and act out a day in the life of that character. They can imagine what challenges and joys their character might face in Ancient Maya society.
