Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of online safety, including how to protect personal information, recognize safe websites, and the importance of being cautious while interacting with others online.

Materials and Prep

  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • Access to a safe online platform (like a kid-friendly website or educational game)
  • Basic knowledge of what personal information is (name, address, phone number, etc.)

Activities

  • Online Safety Quiz:

Create a fun quiz with questions about online safety. The quiz can cover topics like what personal information should never be shared online and how to identify safe websites. The student can take the quiz and discuss the answers together.

  • Safe vs. Unsafe Website Sorting:

Prepare a list of websites (some safe and some not) and have the student categorize them into "Safe" and "Unsafe" piles. Discuss why certain websites are considered safe or unsafe.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios:

Engage in role-playing activities where the student can practice responding to different online situations, such as receiving a friend request from someone they don’t know or being asked for personal information while chatting online.

  • Creating a Safety Poster:

Have the student create a colorful poster that highlights key online safety tips. This can include things like “Never share your password” or “Always ask a parent before clicking on links.”
