Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic scientific methods, tools, and skills through fun, hands-on activities that encourage curiosity and exploration.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Small containers (like cups or bowls)
- Water
- Natural items (like leaves, rocks, or flowers from outside)
- A sunny spot for observation
Before the lesson, gather all materials in a safe area where the student can easily access them. Make sure to explain that we will be exploring and having fun with science!
Activities
-
Nature Exploration:
Take a walk outside and collect different natural items like leaves, rocks, or flowers. Discuss the different colors and shapes of the items you find.
-
Water Experiment:
Fill the small containers with water and drop in different items (like a leaf or a rock). Ask the student what they think will happen and then observe together!
-
Drawing Observations:
After the exploration, have the student draw their favorite item from the nature walk. Discuss what makes it special and why they chose it.
-
Sunny Spot Observation:
Find a sunny spot and sit quietly for a few minutes. Ask the student to notice the sounds, smells, and sights around them.
Talking Points
- "Science is all about asking questions! What do you wonder about the world?"
- "Look at these leaves! How many colors can you see? What shape are they?"
- "When we put the rock in water, what do you think will happen? Let's find out!"
- "Drawing helps us remember what we saw! Can you tell me about your picture?"
- "Sitting quietly helps us notice all the little things around us. What do you hear?"
