Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction and explore simple scientific principles like gravity and plant growth using Minecraft Education.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft Education Edition installed on a device
- An internet connection for accessing Minecraft Education resources
- Basic knowledge of how to navigate Minecraft (moving, placing blocks, etc.)
Activities
-
Building a Math Garden:
The student will create a garden in Minecraft where each type of flower represents a different number. For example, red flowers can represent the number 1, blue flowers can represent the number 2, and so on. The student will then add up the total number of flowers they have planted.
-
Gravity Experiment:
In this activity, the student will build a tower using blocks and then drop different items from the top to see what happens. They will observe how items fall and discuss why some items fall faster than others.
-
Plant Growth Simulation:
The student will plant seeds in Minecraft and observe how they grow over time. They will learn about the conditions needed for plants to grow, such as sunlight and water, and will keep a journal in Minecraft about their plant’s growth.
Talking Points
- "What happens when we add more flowers to our garden? Can you count how many we have?"
- "Look at how the blocks fall! Why do you think some things fall faster?"
- "Let’s make sure our plants have enough sunlight! What do you think they need to grow?"
- "Can you show me how to plant a seed? What do you think will happen next?"
- "What if we try to build a really tall tower? What do you think will happen when we drop something from the top?"
- "How can we make our garden even bigger? Can you think of more flowers to plant?"
