Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. They will also understand the concept of symmetry and be able to create their own geometric art!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Ruler (if available, but not necessary)
Before starting the lesson, review the names of basic shapes and their characteristics. Think about how shapes can be found in everyday life!
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt around the house or outside. Look for objects that match the shapes you learned about. For example, find a round clock for a circle or a square window.
-
Shape Drawing:
Using the paper and pencil, draw different shapes. Challenge the student to create a picture using only shapes. For example, a house can be made from a square and a triangle!
-
Symmetry Art:
Fold a piece of paper in half and draw a shape on one side. Unfold the paper to see the shape's reflection. This helps understand symmetry. Color in both sides to make it beautiful!
Talking Points
- "What shapes do you see around us? Can you name them?"
- "A triangle has three sides. Can you count how many sides your favorite shape has?"
- "Look at this square! It has four equal sides. Can you find something that looks like a square?"
- "Symmetry means something is the same on both sides. Can you make a shape that is symmetrical?"
- "Shapes can be fun! What picture can you create using only shapes?"
- "Great job! Every time you see a shape, remember you are a shape detective!"
