Objective
By the end of this lesson, Spencer will be able to build a simple Lego structure using creativity and problem-solving skills, while also learning about basic shapes and balance.
Materials and Prep
- Various Lego bricks of different shapes and sizes
- A flat surface to build on
- Optional: A timer for timed challenges
Before the lesson, make sure all Lego pieces are clean and sorted by size or color if possible. Prepare a comfortable building area for Spencer to work in.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Spencer will look for different shapes among the Lego bricks and sort them into groups. This helps him recognize shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles.
-
Balance Challenge:
Spencer will try to build a tower using only a specific number of bricks (e.g., 5 bricks) and see how tall he can make it without it falling over. This encourages him to think about balance and stability.
-
Creative Build:
Spencer will choose a theme (like a house, car, or spaceship) and create a structure based on that theme. This activity will foster his imagination and storytelling skills.
-
Timed Building Race:
Set a timer for 5 minutes and challenge Spencer to build the tallest tower he can in that time. This adds excitement and encourages quick thinking!
Talking Points
- "Can you find a square shape in your Lego pieces?"
- "What do you think will happen if we put this piece on top? Will it be stable?"
- "What story does your building tell? Who lives there or what happens inside?"
- "How tall do you think you can make your tower before it falls? Let's find out!"
- "What colors do you see in your creation? Can you name them all?"
- "If you could add one more piece to your build, what would it be and why?"
