Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn how to use water dye drops to color flowers and observe how the flowers change color over time. This fun activity will help them understand how plants absorb water and the concept of color mixing.

Materials and Prep

  • White flowers (like daisies or carnations)
  • Water
  • Food coloring or liquid water dye drops
  • Clear cups or jars
  • Paper towels for cleanup

Before starting the lesson, prepare the cups by filling them halfway with water and adding different colors of dye to each cup. Make sure to have a clean workspace ready for the activities!

Activities

  • Colorful Flower Experiment:

Let’s take our white flowers and place them in the cups filled with colored water. Watch as the flowers drink the water and change color! This will take some time, so we can check back in a little while to see the magic happen.

  • Color Mixing Fun:

What happens if we mix two colors? Let’s take two cups of different colored water and see what happens when we put a flower in each. We can talk about what new colors we might see!

  • Flower Art:

Once the flowers have changed color, let’s take them out and use them to make a beautiful flower art project. We can press them onto paper or arrange them in a fun way!

Talking Points

  • "Do you see how the flower is changing color? That's because it's drinking the colored water!"
  • "What do you think will happen if we mix blue and yellow? Let’s find out together!"
  • "Isn’t it cool how flowers can drink? They use their stems like straws!"
  • "What colors do you see? Can you name them all?"
  • "Let’s make something beautiful with our colorful flowers! What should we create?"
