Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic financial literacy concepts in the context of agriculture, including budgeting, income, expenses, and profit calculations. They will be able to create a simple budget for a small farm or garden project.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils for calculations and notes
  • Calculator (optional, for more complex calculations)
  • Access to information about common crops and their market prices (this can be done through discussion or prior knowledge)
  • Knowledge of basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Crop Selection and Costing

Have the student choose three crops they would like to "grow" in their imaginary farm. They will research or discuss the costs associated with planting, maintaining, and harvesting these crops. This will help them understand the initial investment needed.

  • Activity 2: Budget Creation

Using the information gathered in the first activity, the student will create a budget that includes all costs (seeds, soil, water, tools, etc.). They will learn how to categorize expenses and keep track of their financial planning.

  • Activity 3: Profit Calculation

Once the budget is complete, the student will estimate how much they could sell their crops for after harvest. They will calculate their potential profit by subtracting their total expenses from their total income.

  • Activity 4: Presentation

Finally, the student will present their farm project to you, explaining their crop choices, budget, and profit calculations. This will enhance their communication skills and reinforce their understanding of the concepts.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think it's important to know how much money you need to start a farm?"
  • "Can you think of some expenses that a farmer might have? Let's list them together!"
  • "What do you think happens if a farmer spends more money than they make? How does that affect their farm?"
  • "How can we figure out how much money we can make from selling our crops?"
  • "Why is it important to keep track of your money when running a farm or any business?"
  • "What did you learn about budgeting today? How can that help you in other areas of life?"
