Objective
By the end of this lesson, Lively will understand the basic concept of community and the roles of different people in her neighborhood. She will be able to identify various community helpers and describe what they do to help others.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers for drawing
- A comfortable space for storytelling and activities
- Optional: A simple map of the neighborhood (can be drawn together)
Before the lesson, think about the different community helpers in your area, like firefighters, teachers, and doctors. This will help make the lesson more relatable for Lively.
Activities
-
Story Time:
Read a short story about community helpers. Discuss who the helpers are and what they do. This will help Lively understand the importance of each role in the community.
-
Draw Your Community:
Have Lively draw a picture of her neighborhood. Encourage her to include community helpers like a police officer, a doctor, or a teacher. Ask her to explain her drawing to you.
-
Role Play:
Act out different community helper roles. Take turns pretending to be a firefighter, a doctor, or a teacher. This will make learning fun and interactive!
-
Community Helper Parade:
Create a mini parade in your living room. Lively can hold her drawings and pretend to be different community helpers as she walks around, explaining what each helper does.

- "Why do you think firefighters wear special clothes? What do they help us with?"
- "What do you think a doctor does? How do they help people feel better?"
- "Isn't it fun to pretend to be a community helper? What helper do you want to be next?"
