Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will have a hands-on experience visiting an apple orchard, learning about apple picking, and working collaboratively with siblings. They will also create delicious apple-based recipes, write a report about apples, and craft a story reflecting their orchard visit.
Materials and Prep
- Basket or bag for picking apples
- Money for purchasing apples
- Ingredients for applesauce, apple pie, and apple crisp (apples, sugar, cinnamon, flour, butter, etc.)
- Writing materials (notebook, pen/pencil)
- Access to a computer or paper for the report
- Recipe resources (books or printed recipes)
Before the lesson, ensure you have selected an apple orchard to visit and check their picking schedule. Familiarize yourself with the recipes you plan to make and gather the necessary ingredients.
Activities
- Apple Orchard Visit:
Take a trip to the apple orchard with your siblings. Spend time picking apples together, discussing which varieties you like best, and enjoying the fresh air. This is a great opportunity to bond and learn about teamwork.
- Bagging and Purchasing Apples:
Once you've picked your apples, work together to bag them. Discuss how many apples you have and how much they might cost. When you're ready, go to the checkout and practice paying for your apples, learning about the value of money and transactions.
- Cooking Time:
Use the apples you picked to make applesauce, apple pie, and apple crisp. Follow the recipes together, dividing tasks among siblings. This activity will teach you about measuring ingredients, following instructions, and the joy of cooking.
- Writing a Report:
Research and write a report about apples, including facts about different varieties, nutritional benefits, and how they grow. This will help enhance your writing and research skills.
- Storytelling:
Craft a story about your visit to the apple orchard. Include details about the experience, the fun you had with your siblings, and what you learned. This will encourage creativity and narrative skills.
