Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of patriotism, recognize symbols of their country, and express their feelings about being a patriot through art and writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any color)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Glue and scissors
  • Printed images of national symbols (like the flag, eagle, etc.) or simple sketches
  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • A comfortable space for working on art and writing

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with a few national symbols and their meanings, as well as some simple definitions of patriotism.

Activities

  • Symbol Scavenger Hunt: Go on a mini scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find items that represent your country (like a flag, a red, white, and blue item, etc.). Discuss what each item means and why it is important.

  • Patriotic Art Project: Use the materials to create a piece of art that represents patriotism. This could be a drawing of the flag, a collage of national symbols, or a picture of something that makes you proud to be a citizen.

  • Patriotism Journal: Write a few sentences in your notebook about what being a patriot means to you. You can also draw a picture to go along with your writing.
