Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of the Kings of Israel, including who they were, what they did, and why they are important in history.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and colored pencils or crayons
  • A timeline chart drawn on a large piece of paper
  • Fun stickers or stamps to represent different kings
  • A comfortable space to sit and learn
  • Basic knowledge of the Kings of Israel (like Saul, David, and Solomon) to share)

Activities

  • King's Crown Craft:

The student will create their own crown using paper and colored pencils. They can decorate it with drawings or stickers that represent the qualities of a good king. Once finished, they can wear it while learning!

  • Timeline of Kings:

Using the timeline chart, the student will place stickers or drawings of the kings in the order that they ruled. This will help them visualize the history of Israel's kings over time.

  • Storytime with Kings:

Read a simplified story about one of the kings, like David and Goliath or Solomon's wisdom. After reading, the student can draw their favorite part of the story.

  • Role Play:

The student can choose a king and act out a scene from their life. For example, they could pretend to be King David playing the harp or King Solomon making a wise decision. This will make learning fun and engaging!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that Israel had many kings? Some were good and some were not so good!"
  • "King Saul was the first king of Israel. He was chosen because the people wanted a king to lead them!"
  • "King David is one of the most famous kings. He was a brave warrior and wrote many songs!"
  • "Solomon, David's son, was known for his wisdom. People came from far away to ask him questions!"
  • "The kings of Israel had to make important decisions. Sometimes they listened to God, and sometimes they didn’t!"
  • "Learning about these kings helps us understand how people lived a long time ago!"
  • "What do you think makes a good king? Let's think of some qualities together!"
