Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of sailing, the geography of the route from Washington State to Sidney, British Columbia, and the importance of navigation and weather in sailing. They will also engage in fun activities that reinforce these concepts.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking and drawing
  • A map of the Pacific Northwest, including Washington State and British Columbia
  • Access to the internet for research (if available)
  • Simple sailing terms glossary (prepared in advance)
  • Visual aids (drawings or printouts of sailboats, maps, and weather symbols)

Activities

  • Map Exploration:

Using the map, the student will trace the route from Washington State to Sidney, identifying key landmarks and bodies of water along the way. This activity will help them visualize the journey and understand the geography involved in sailing.

  • Sailing Vocabulary Game:

The student will learn basic sailing terms and create flashcards. They can quiz themselves or have a family member quiz them on these terms. This will help them become familiar with the language of sailing.

  • Weather Watch:

The student will research the typical weather conditions for sailing in the Pacific Northwest. They can create a weather chart showing the best times to sail, which will teach them about the importance of weather in sailing.

  • Design Your Sailboat:

Using paper and drawing materials, the student will design their own sailboat. They can label different parts of the boat and explain how each part helps in sailing. This activity encourages creativity while reinforcing their understanding of sailing mechanics.
